“Make sure you keep on the main trail,” Gunner said to Emma. “That red coat of yours stands out from a mile away.”

He was trying like hell to act like they had before she’d turned his world upside down into something he sure as hell wasn’t ready for, but that was turning out to be impossible to ignore. He couldn’t stop remembering the touch of her skin, as soft as rose petals. The smell of her fragrance, as stirring as any aphrodisiac. The hot, tight feeling of being deep inside of her like nothing he’d ever felt before.

But mostly the scary-as-hell feeling of being connected at the soul. With anyone else, he would have been spooked enough to walk. Not with Emma. With her, he craved that connection, needing it as much as he needed air to breathe.

“In my line of work, standing out is the point. Storm chasing is a dangerous profession.” Her words snapped him out of his dangerous thoughts. “I need to be seen if I get separated from my group, and my red coat works beautifully for that.” Her tone sounded cold and terse, definitely not warm and passionate like it had only a couple hours ago, which actually made it easier for him to focus on their mission and not the romantic thoughts he had no business thinking. “I didn’t think about that,” she admitted.

“That much is obvious. You tend to be impulsive. Haven’t you ever heard good things come to those who wait?”

She blew out a frustrated breath. “Well, someone has to do something when the situation calls for it, or things don’t get done.”

“Logically, the sheriff would have gone after the girl one day later when the storm ended, with a lot more reinforcements, I might add.” He shot her the same look he would shoot an unreasonable child. “If only you had waited.”

She threw her hands in the air. “You men and your ridiculous logic. Sometimes you need to throw caution to the wind and act. If we had waited one day later, we would have missed out on any chance of finding the girl.”

“There’s no point in talking about the right or wrong way in rescuing the girl now. The damage is already done, and we’re already here.”

Emma rolled her eyes at him and looked around as they walked. “We’re getting closer now. I can feel it.”

“The one who is injured is slowing them down.” Gunner inspected a broken tree branch that had blood on it. “These guys are no amateurs. You’d better hope they don’t decide the girl isn’t worth it, cut their losses, and move on.”

“Oh,
